Matatū Launches South Island Sevens Tournament
This November, the inaugural Matatū Sevens Tournament will be launched in Christchurch.
Super Rugby Aupiki team Matatū values championing pathways and opportunities for females to participate in sport and see benefit in more women's competitions in the south. Matatū Super Rugby team represents the Provincial Unions of Tasman, Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, West Coast, Buller, North Otago, Otago and Southland.
“This is about creating something special for Te Waipounamu and bringing the south together through sevens,” says Matatū Head Coach and Head of Rugby Whitney Hansen.
Held at Prebbleton Rugby Club on Saturday 8 November, Matatū has collaborated with provincial unions from right across the South Island to bring the tournament to life.
The tournament promises to bring a day of fast-paced competition and inclusive rugby action to the South Island.
Registrations are now open, and teams are encouraged to sign up early to secure their spot.
“The South Island female rugby space is continuing to expand, and sevens has an important role to play in the pathway. We want to build a space where female athletes can compete, connect, and enjoy the game they love,” says Hansen.
It's open to everyone – whether you're chasing a title or just looking for a fun day out, this event is designed to welcome all levels of experience.
"If you're a school team, a club, or just want to rally some mates together, we'd love to have as many teams from across the South Island come to Christchurch - we're looking forward to seeing everyone here come November."
