Breaking down the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki playoff race
Round 6 of Sky Super Rugby Aupiki is upon us, with everything still in play at the top of the table. Matatū, the nib Blues Women and Hurricanes Poua are all fighting for finals positioning – and with it, the right to host.
If you’ve been trying to work out exactly what needs to happen this weekend, you’re not alone. There are a few moving parts which are all broken down below.
Heading into the final round, Matatū are in the box seat on 19 competition points. The Blues sit on 14, just ahead of Hurricanes Poua on 13.
That means:
Matatū can finish either 1st or 2nd
Blues can finish anywhere from 1st to 3rd
Hurricanes Poua can finish 2nd or 3rd
Only Matatū or the nib Blues Women can host a home final, so all eyes will be on our game on Saturday 18 July as we fight for the right to host a home final for the first time in our history.
Tiebreakers
Before diving into scenarios, it’s worth understanding the tiebreakers.
If two teams are level on competition points:
Head-to-head competition points from this season’s two meetings between those two sides decide who ranks higher
If still tied, overall points differential comes into play
How Matatū secure top spot
Matatū will finish first if:
They beat the Blues
Draw with the Blues
Lose to the Blues, as long as the Blues don’t earn a bonus point
The only real danger comes if the Blues win and pick up a bonus point – that’s the one situation that can knock Matatū off the top.
How the Blues can finish first
They must:
Beat Matatū
Earn a bonus point in the process
If that happens, both teams finish level on 19 competition points. From there, the Blues would jump ahead thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker across the season.
Across the two meetings:
Matatū claimed 4 competition points earlier in the season
The Blues would take 5 from a bonus-point win this weekend
It’s also worth noting, In Aupiki: to earn a try-scoring bonus point, a team needs to score three more tries than their opponent. That makes the Blues’ job even tougher – it’s not just about winning, it’s about winning well.
If they win without a bonus point, it’s not enough. Matatū would still finish first and host.
The race for second place
Behind that top spot battle, there’s another contest playing out.
The Hurricanes Poua can climb to second, but they need:
Matatū to beat or draw with the Blues
And to beat Chiefs Manawa themselves
In most cases, a win alone will be enough. However, there’s one subtle scenario to watch:
If the Blues draw and collect a try-scoring bonus point, they move to 17
In that case, Hurricanes Poua would need a bonus-point win to reach 18 and move ahead
So, if you’re settling in to watch this weekend, here’s the simplest way to follow it all in real time:
Matatū win or draw? They’re hosting the final.
Blues win with a bonus point? They steal top spot and host the final.
Blues win narrowly? Matatū still host, Blues likely finish second.
Hurricanes Poua win + Blues slip? Poua can climb into second.
What makes this final round so exciting is how little separates these teams. Matatū have put themselves in a strong position, but nothing is guaranteed. The Blues still have a pathway to leapfrog them, and Hurricanes Poua remain firmly in the hunt for second.
There’s everything to play for in the last round robin of Sky Super Rugby Aupiki 2026. The stakes have never been higher, and anything can happen.
Hurricanes Poua take on Chiefs Manawa at 12.20pm on Saturday 18 July, then Matatū take on nib Blues Women at 2.35pm.
