Match report: Matatū to host historic home final despite loss to nib Blues Women

Matatū will host a Super Rugby Aupiki final for the first time in club history, finishing top of the table despite a 38–29 loss to nib Blues Women in the final round robin clash in Christchurch. 

With a place in the final already secured, Saturday’s match at Ngā Puna Wai carried a different kind of edge. The Blues arrived knowing they needed not only a win, but a bonus point win, to leapfrog Matatū and therefore host a home final, but it was Matatū who still came out on top of the ladder at full time.  

What unfolded was exactly what you’d expect between the competition’s best sides – a high-quality, back-and-forth contest that never let up. 

Matatū struck first through Kaipo Olsen-Baker, finishing a well-worked move close to the line, before Maia Davis added the extras. The Blues hit back quickly though, capitalising on a charge down before settling into the contest. From there, the game became a genuine arm wrestle, with both sides trading tries throughout the first half. 

A powerful finish from Olsen-Baker just before the break edged Matatū closer, but the Blues stayed within striking distance to lead 21–19 at halftime after Taufa Bason snuck in just before half time.  

The second half continued in the same fashion – momentum swinging between the two sides as both attacked with intent. Charntay Poko crossed after sharp pressure on defence, and Matatū continued to threaten through the middle with strong carries from Amy du Plessis and Grace Brooker. 

But the Blues found another level in the final quarter. 

A long-range strike sparked their surge, before Braxton Sorensen-McGee added a late try – and crucial conversion – to stretch the margin beyond reach. Despite a late response from Binky Muamua, Matatū couldn’t quite reel them back in. 

While the result didn’t fall our way, the outcome around the competition did. 

Matatū denied the Blues a bonus point, keeping our spot at the top of the ladder – and confirming a home final next weekend. 

Now, attention turns immediately to the rematch. 

With the Blues win booking their place in the final, the two sides will go head-to-head again this Saturday – this time with everything on the line. 

The stage shifts to One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch, where Matatū will run out in front of a home crowd with the title up for grabs. 

It’s a moment this group has earned across the season – and one they now have the chance to share with their community.
