A Celebration of wāhine rugby in the South

The Matatū Sevens delivered an unforgettable day of rugby action, bringing together players, supporters, and the wider community to celebrate the incredible wāhine talent across the South Island.

Held at Prebbleton Rugby Club, the event was packed with high-energy matches, passionate supporters, and a strong sense of whanaungatanga. From the first kickoff to the final whistle, the atmosphere was electric, a true showcase of women’s rugby at its finest.

CGHS - winners of the Under 18s competition

In the Under 18s competition, Christchurch Girls’ High School emerged victorious after a series of impressive performances, demonstrating skill, teamwork, and determination.

New Brighton - winners of the women’s competition

In the women’s division, New Brighton claimed the top spot after a hard-fought final against a strong Linwood side, capping off the day with a thrilling match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

The inaugural Matatū Sevens tournament was an incredible success, with a fantastic atmosphere that truly celebrated the spirit of rugby. Events like this are so important because they provide opportunities for females to play Sevens and showcase their talent in a safe space. When young wahine see these pathways in action, it inspires them to dream big and know that there is a place for them in rugby at every level.
— Sarah Munro, Matatū General Manager
