Matatū are the team for Te Waka o Aoraki, our South Island. We are proud to represent the entire region, and provide a pathway to professional rugby for wahine from across the motu.

We are thrilled then to welcome a wider training group into the Matatū camp, to train with the team and continue to build and support talent.

The players are Sammie Bean (Otago), Keeley Hill (Otago), Jamie Church (Otago), Tayla Simpson (Canterbury), Keighley Simpson (Canterbury), Amy Milnes (Canterbury) Charlotte Allen (Canterbury), Brooklyn Logan (Tasman) and Chloe Dixon (Tasman).

“Inviting these athletes in to train with us is an opportunity to expose the next tier of talent in the South Island to our environment,” said Whitney Hansen, Matatū Head Coach.

“It’s a chance for them to learn what takes place in a high performance environment, and to inspire them by seeing first hand the pathway and the players who have moved through it.”

Including these up-and-coming players in training not only gives coaches and team management a chance to see their skillset and potential, but also who they are as people.

“Matatū are proud to represent the whole of the South Island and this group is a true representation of this. We’re working hard to grow relationships with the Provincial Unions across the South Island and are working alongside them to develop talent from within Te Waka o Aoraki.

“The future of Matatū is exciting, showcased in the young group of athletes that have joined us this season and those that will join in the seasons to come.”
