Chey Robins‑Reti departs Matatū after redefining our backfield

Chey Robins‑Reti is departing Matatū after 3 years in the jersey.

The 28-year-old wing joined Matatū with a rare level of experience, coming in as a triple international across sevens, fifteens and league. What quickly stood out, though, was how easily she connected with people.

She carried herself with confidence, but she was open, curious and happy to share what she knew which shaped the way our backfield played during her time here. She backed her instincts and lifted the tempo of the game in a way that gave the players around her more freedom to express themselves.

In her first season she played an important part in our 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki title run. In the semifinal against the Blues, she crossed three times and showed her sharpness under pressure and how quickly she could influence a match.

At a time when we were still finding our feet as a group, performances like that helped give the team confidence in who we were becoming. Her leadership grew from there, especially through her involvement in the Tūhono group, where she became a steady presence as we built our connection with each other and our communities.

A hamstring injury that delayed her 2025 season was a tough challenge, but even then, she found another way to contribute. She supported younger backs, helped shape new combinations and gave them someone they could lean on during the campaign.

Chey’s commitment to giving back extended beyond Matatū. She invested time in Global 7s, supported developing players and offered meaningful guidance within the U20s space. She made people feel seen, and that made a real difference for players still learning how to handle the demands of high‑performance environments.

Chey's attitude shaped her legacy here just as much as anything she produced on the field. It showed younger athletes what professionalism can look like day‑to‑day and set behaviours that will continue in this group long after she moves on.

As Chey departs Matatū, we’re grateful for everything she brought to our environment: her experience, her honesty and her willingness to help others find their confidence. Her influence will be felt in this team for a long time to come.
